Trevor Noah wasn’t the only person asked to replace Jon Stewart on “The Daily Show”, nor was he the first. Among those who were considered were Amy Poehler and Chris Rock. Aziz Ansari, Sarah Silverman and “Daily Show” correspondent Jessica Williams were also considered candidates by viewers of the show.
Amy Poehler got a call from Comedy Central, despite suspicions that she would most likely say no. Poehler immediately refused the idea. Chris Rock considered hosting the show, but only for an interim. Comedy Central wanted someone with more staying power. Trevor Noah, somewhat of an unknown, was the only candidate that the network made a formal offer to, Salon reports June 20.
Trevor Noah, 31, is a relatively new face at “The Daily Show.” He’s a stand-up comedian who now has some pretty big shoes to fill. In March, hetweeted that “No one can replace Jon Stewart. But together with the amazing team at The Daily Show, we will continue to make this the best damn news show!” Noah told The New York Times that he was encouraged by Stewart, despite his lack of experience. “He told me, ‘I was where you were when I took over the show. Nobody knew me. I was just starting out, finding my voice, and that’s when I was handed this seat.’ ”
According to The New York Times, “The Daily Show” is going through a “reinvention” that is making things a little rocky for Noah (remember the slew of controversial tweets dug up on him after the announcement that he would be Stewart’s successor?) as well as the Comedy Central Network. However, it’s evident that Noah has the talent to push forth, despite criticisms. Comedy Central Network “has a habit of gambling on relative unknowns,” but the comedian has proven that he’s more than worthy. Questions still remain whether “The Daily Show” will continue to be the popular show it has become.
