The world of robotics these days is awe-striking. Robotics specialists have been creating robots that can learn, recover from damage and accomplish many tasks that need to be done, spanning the range from manufacturing plants to the kitchen. NBC News reports today that a new robot, designed by the Yaskawa Bushido Project, swings a katana just as elegantly as a master samurai.
A demonstration featuring laido master Machii Isao and the sword-wielding robot can be seen in the above video. Each swing of the blade by the robot mimics those of Isao with swift and deadly precision. In some shots, as with the rising cut to the rose, it seems that the Samurai cannot be emulated to perfection, but then, the demonstration shows Isao’s horizontal cut to a citrus fruit. What follows is an impressive feat, where the robot effortly slices six of the fruit. Then, the robot separates two parts of the outer pod of a string bean which measures only 1 cm in thickness.
For the finale feat, each demonstrator wields their swords to deliver one thousand cuts into multiple columns of rolled straw mats which surround each of them. Both man and robot are successful. However, the robot does not tire. The robot does not sweat.
In the background, many engineers help to set up the stages on which the demonstrators perform. According to ZME Science, it took a lot of time and effort to program the The Motoman-mh24 -- a high-speed robot that can accomplish many tasks -- to demonstrate as it did. It was not able to work from experience as did Isao, a samurai sword legend who has broken five Guinness World Records with feats such as delivering the most cuts in three minutes and slicing a BB pellet in half mid-flight. It is undeniable, however, that the demonstration showed that the swiftness and precision in robots have come a long way even in a few short years.
